Description
Retention of 790 spectator grandstand
The proposal sought retrospective full planning permission for the retention of 790 spectator seats installed at Guildford Spectrum athletics track, home to Guildford City Football Club. The seating consists of six blocks of tiered, fixed seats (three red and three white) mounted on existing concrete terraces along the southern boundary of the pitch. The development did not involve changes to access, parking, or the overall use of the site, and builds on a history of approved sports-related improvements at the venue.
The supporting planning case argued that the seating is appropriate in principle, aligns with national and local planning policies, and enhances the existing sports facility without causing harm. It has minimal visual impact due to its contained location within the stadium and does not affect nearby residential properties given the distance and surrounding woodland. Importantly, the seating improved health and safety by replacing informal use of concrete terraces with proper spectator accommodation, supporting the club’s operations and community role. Overall, the proposal was presented as a modest, policy-compliant improvement that promotes safe, accessible, and sustainable sporting infrastructure.
