Description
Orangery style rear extension
The clients on this project wished to construct an Orangery style extension to the rear of their dwelling to achieve additional habitable floorspace.
Planit designed the extension and a householder planning application was submitted to the Council to cover these works.
As the site lies within the ‘Countryside Beyond the Green Belt’ under the Waverley Council Local plan there are no specific policies in relation to the permitted size of householder extensions in these rural locations. However, adopted Policy does require that ‘the intrinsic character and beauty of the countryside’ be recognised and safeguarded. Therefore, a careful design for the extension was required, and one which both maximised floorspace, enhanced the flow of floor space in the dwelling, but also enhanced the overall appearance of the existing house. The resulting design is a modestly sized single storey extension which takes the form of a part timber and part glazed garden room / Orangery.
