Description
Conversion of traditional long stable block to high quality new home
This project involved a carefully considered two-stage planning and design strategy to secure the conversion of a traditional long stable block, located within the grounds of a larger dwelling, into a high-quality new home.
The first stage, completed in 2023, secured a Certificate of Lawfulness confirming the use of the existing stables as ancillary residential accommodation. Building on this established fallback position, a full planning application was subsequently submitted and approved in 2026 for the change of use to a self-contained dwelling, including associated landscaping works.
In line with both local and national planning policy, the approved scheme represents a sustainable form of development within a countryside setting. The proposal delivers a new dwelling without adverse impacts on neighbouring properties, while making efficient use of an existing structure—thereby avoiding the environmental costs typically associated with new-build construction.
The sensitive redesign of the building provides high-quality, well-considered accommodation, while preserving and enhancing a structure of local heritage significance. The scheme responds positively to its context, reflecting the character of the surrounding area and contributing to the Borough’s housing supply in a thoughtful and sustainable manner.
